Many soccer fans remember Landon Donovan as the face of the US Men’s National Team but not too many have followed his career.

‘Captain America’ as he was often dubbed, was the most recognised soccer player to ever come out of America due to his pace, intelligence and eye for goal which was uncommon for an American player back then.

Landon Donovan is the all-time leading goal-scorer for the USA, having guided them to the quarter-finals in the 2002 World Cup and the last 16 in 2010.

The 41-year-old retired from football in 2016 having played for LA Galaxy, for most of his career. He also had stints in Europe most notably for Bayern Munich and Everton where he became a crowd favourite during his two loan spells. His biggest achievement however was when he wore the stars and stripes of the USA which saw him become the highest American and North American goal scorer with five goals.

Landon Donovan is now balancing broadcasting and coaching roles

He is the current head coach of the USL’s San Diego Loyal, a club he co-founded back in 2019. He also serves as a stakeholder and strategic advisor for lower-tier English team Lincoln City, according to The Athletic

“My role [at Lincoln City] is if – at any point, in any way – they need help, then I’m happy to try to help, but you don’t come into a club that’s been this successful and pretend that you have much to add,” he said.
