Former Kaizer Chiefs winger Junior Khanye predicts Orlando Pirates to dominate the DStv Premiership next season.

The 39-year-old former footballer was speaking after Mamelodi Sundowns parted ways with their coach Rulani Mokwena this week. Khanye believes Mokwena was on the right track to earn Masandawana their second elusive CAF Champions League.

Speaking on iDiski TV, Khanye said Rulani leaving could open a door for Pirates.

“Letting go of [Rulani Mokwena] will destroy the club, Pirates will dominate. They are the only team that could challenge Sundowns whether individual brilliance or intimidation,” he said.

The Buccaneers announced the signing of Delvi Miguel Vieira last week. The 23-year-old joined the club on a three-year deal after passing a medical and finalising personal terms. Khanye said the Buccaneers needed to recruit more quality players to compete with Downs for the league. Last season, Pirates defeated Sundowns in two finals.

“You can see Pirates mean business,” said Khanye on iDiski TV.

“They want to be like [Mamelodi] Sundowns, they want to compete in the Champions League. They want to see themselves competing like Mamelodi Sundowns and in order for you to do that you need experienced players.

“He’s not a bad player, right-forward, left-forward and central as well. I saw him, he’s forceful and a very skilful player.”

Last season, Junior Khanye backed Orlando Pirates to challenge Mamelodi Sundowns for the DStv Premiership. Despite a promising start to the 2023/24 season, the Buccaneers fell off allowing the Brazilians to run away with the league.
