Orlando Pirates founding father Andries ‘Pele Pele’ Mkhwanazi is celebrating his 101st birthday TODAY, 04 November 2021.

For a younger generation that loves Pirates and football at large, going back to the history books may be a mission.

However, as the country and perhaps the world celebrates Mkhwanazi’s 101st birthday, The South African gives you the five interesting facts about the old man.

THE 5 INTERESTING FACTS

  1. Andries Mkhwanazi was born on 4 November 1920 in Orlando.
  2. At 14, he was part of the Orlando Boys Club, a small band of teenagers in the Soweto township.
  3. Mkhwanazi encouraged the formation of a football team (Orlando Pirates) in 1937 – he had an eye for football talent.
  4. Interestingly, Mkhwanazi was a boxing trainer at the Orlando Boys Club.
  5. When Mkhwanazi’s football team broke away from Orlando Boys Club in 1939, they gathered at his home, and he named the club ‘AMAPIRATE’ and the rest is history.
