THE 5 INTERESTING FACTS
- Andries Mkhwanazi was born on 4 November 1920 in Orlando.
- At 14, he was part of the Orlando Boys Club, a small band of teenagers in the Soweto township.
- Mkhwanazi encouraged the formation of a football team (Orlando Pirates) in 1937 – he had an eye for football talent.
- Interestingly, Mkhwanazi was a boxing trainer at the Orlando Boys Club.
- When Mkhwanazi’s football team broke away from Orlando Boys Club in 1939, they gathered at his home, and he named the club ‘AMAPIRATE’ and the rest is history.
