At the start of the current season, it was no secret that Chiefs were searching rigorously for a striker, both on the South African market and abroad. One of the strikers that was thought to have been of keen interest outside the borders was Mayele. In fact, according to some reports on the continent, it was believed to have been more than just interest but a done deal between the two clubs for his services.

A move for Mayele would’ve mad sense at the time, with the club having lost the likes of Samir Nurkovic, Leonardo Castro, Bernard Parker as well as Lazarous Kambole all in one window. At that moment, the only forward they had signed that can play through the middle was Ashley Du Preez, but a bigger more physical option was always expected to make its way to Chiefs as coach Arthur Zwane was rather vocal about having a different profile striker to hold up play.

In the end, it was not Mayele but Burundi international Caleb-Bonfis Bimenyimana. With the lanky target man proving to be hit and miss at Chiefs, the club seeing Mayele scoring on the continent could just be having them reminiscing on what could have been.

Could Mayele still be interesting Chiefs?

Bimenyimana might have seven goals to his name at Chiefs, but in 16 matches for the club, but with the bulk of those coming from the penalty spot. Furthermore, despite a positive start, he has fallen off the the club’s fans and the pecking order since the arrivals of Christian Saile. Mayele has scored 12 goals in 14 overall appearances in Africa this year, which might see Amakhosi alerted to the 28-year-old striker.
