At the start of a new week, South Africa’s so-called ‘big three’ teams – Chiefs, Pirates and Sundowns – are understandably all involved in interesting player target reports. As it is, both the resumption of the DStv Premiership – and the January transfer window – are now just around the corner.

As expected, there have certainly been no shortage of transfer rumours doing the rounds when it comes to Kaizer Chiefs.

According to Phakaaathi, Chiefs could now look to target AmaZulu defender Thembela Sikhakhane, whose contract expires in June next year.

“Chiefs and Royal AM are the two teams we know are watching the situation with a keen eye right now,” a source was quoted as saying. “And they will be able to make their interest public in January, when he is in the last six months of his contract at Usuthu.”

Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates have reportedly won the race to sign young Cameroonian striker Marou Souaibou on a four-year deal.

Last month, Cameroonian football website kick442.com reported that Souaibou – who formed part of Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions squad at the FIFA World Cup – had signed a multi-year deal worth around R3.4 million plus add-ons with Pirates.

At the start of this week, it’s now been reported that the club has officially agreed to sell Souaibou for an amount of US$200 000 (R3.4m), which will be paid with a 15% selling on fee.

Finally, in another interesting article to emerge on Monday, rumours suggest Mamelodi Sundowns could be interested in former Bafana Bafana star Thulani Serero.

Serero has been plying his trade with Al Jazira in the United Arab Emirates, but the 32-year-old will see his contract there coming to an end in the middle of next year.

“Sundowns are offering something just above R1-million a month for him, he earns a bit more that side,” a Phakaaathi source commented. “But considering that he has made decent money in the three years he spent on that side, he might be open to the idea of coming back home.”

The DStv Premiership has been on a mid-season break as the FIFA World Cup has been playing out in Qatar, but local league action will soon get back under way. As it stands, Sundowns, Richards Bay, SuperSport United, Chiefs and Pirates occupy the top five spots on the league log.

Teams have already begun to return to training as preparation begins for an incredibly busy set of fixtures heading into the new year.
