Thembinkosi Lorch has had quite a season. Since returning to Orlando Pirates from his loan spell with Chippa United, his star has been on the rise. Not bad going for a player who was slogging it out with Maluti College just a few seasons ago.

Nominated for four gongs at the 2019 PSL Awards (Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Season, Midfielder of the Season and TKO Player of the Season), he’s unlikely to finish the season empty-handed, unlike his club.

A modest man, Lorch dedicated his nominations to his teammates.

“I am pleased with the nominations. This is an honour and reward for all the hard work that one has put in throughout the season. I would also like to thank my teammates because without them I wouldn’t have this recognition. These nominations are much theirs as they are mine because football is not a one-man game, the team makes the individual not the other way around,” Lorch told Pirates’ official website when the list of nominees was announced.

Here are some fast facts about Lorch.

His nickname means “shit”

But not in a bad way. Nicknamed “Nyoso” which is derived from “o dira nyoso” which means “he’s the shit”.

An all-round sports guy

He might be earning a living from playing soccer, but when he does get down time, he likes to play other sports, too, including cricket.

Screamer Tshabalala first spotted him

He started playing with Maluti College, a TVET College club founded in 2008, back in 2013. reamer Tshabalala spotted him after a game against Jomo Cosmos and let him know that Pirates are keeping an eye on him. He soon signed with the Buccaneers but was sent on loan to Chippa United before he even made the first team. When he returned, though, the turn around was dramatic.

His father owned the club where he first played

Before his move to the college club, Lorch Senior owned Mountain Eagles in Ficksburg, where Lorch junior first started to play. His dad, though, is a dedicated Kaizer Chiefs fan and despite Lorch’s best efforts to convert him, that’s not yet happened. Although, considering the woeful season Amakhosi just had, maybe change is looming. In an interview with KickOff, Lorch said that his whole family supports Chiefs – and he did too when he was growing up.

His career nearly didn’t take off because he didn’t have an ID

While he was still playing with Mountain Eagles, he went for trials  at Maluti FET College FC. In an interview with Soccer Laduma, the coach who spotted him explained that it took just “five to ten minutes” before he decided he’d sign Lorch. The coach then discovered Lorch did not have an ID – a requirement to sign n nthe Motsepe League. Lorch did have a birth certificate, though. After a bit of a mission, his ID got sorted back in 2012. The rest is history, sort of.

His Wikipedia page needs some help

At the time of writing, Lorch’s Wikipedia page (see screenshot below) was looking pretty empty. It also contained a seemingly arb and incorrect claim that he was in a “serious relationship with joy kavekotora also known as toxic_joy_2004_” [sic]

Now, we’re not about to go full People Magazine in South Africa’s footballers, but a quick search for “Joy” returned some rather dubious results. Go on Pirates fans, help a man out.

He’s a huge fan of Thulani Serero

On the club’s official website, it says that he’s a big fan of fellow midfielder Thulani Serero. Well, who isn’t?
