Following confirmation from Downs on Monday night that there was interest in the Bafana Bafana striker, Masandawana revealed he was in negotiations with a North American club. The team in question, according to SABC Sport sources, is Toronto FC. The Brazilians have not made any further comment since that initial statement aside from claiming they support Mailula and the move.

Mailula’s agent hasn’t given much away either:

“I am not giving comment on this transaction until I have the green light to share,” said Karabo Tshabuse, who is also an attorney.

Mailula not with the Sundowns squad in Holland

22-year-old Mailula didn’t travel to the Netherlands for pre-season camp with coach Rulani Mokwena’s PSL champions. It is expected the move to America’s top-flight will go through pending medicals and other finer details. There is no official agreement in place between the two clubs, however, according to SABC Sport.

However, Sundowns have given the player permission to discuss personal terms so a transfer could be imminent. A fee of roughly R30-million (around USD 1.6m) is being mentioned. Mailula was outstanding for the Brazilians in his breakout season when he stood in for regular striker Peter Shalulile. He bagged 15 goals in 31 matches across all competitions. That fine form bagged him the Young Player of the Season award.
