Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs aren set to go head to head for a number of transfer targets.

That is nothing new as Sundowns and Chiefs have been tussling for talent for decades.

15-20 years ago, it would be Chiefs that gain an upper hand in such tussles, as they had the success. Amakhosi were winning trophies and their brand oozed with confidence that saw them nicknamed the “Glamour Boys”. This obviously made them one of the most attractive propositions in the country. In the last decade or so, however, the tables have seemingly turned on to Sundowns side.

It’s thought Sundowns and Chiefs are ready to compete for the likes of Fawaaz Basadien, Khanyisa Mayo and Shandre Campbell. The latest players they’re supposedly battling for is Elias Mokwana of Sekhukhune United

This publication recently reported that Mokwana has his heart set on a move to Chiefs. This is due to the club being his boyhood team. It is also thought that he has a soft spot for their arch rivals Orlando Pirates due to their playing style. On the side of Sundowns though, they are still in the picture according to The Citizen.

Sundowns still monitoring Mokwana

“Look, Sundowns have been keeping tabs on him and he was discussed this season. They ended up not going for him but I know for a fact that he’s a player they have been monitoring. I’m not saying they have approached Sekhukhune yet, but after his performances for Bafana, I would be surprised if they don’t look in his direction again. From what I understand, it’s quiet now regarding approaches from other clubs but I don’t expect him to stay at Sekhukhune beyond this season.” Said a source claimed to be close to the Sundowns technical team.

Chiefs and Pirates still interested?

If Mokwana keeps up his current form, he could end up as part of the biggest tug-of-war. Chiefs, Sundowns and Pirates all vying for his signature would be a dream scenario for Sekhukhune.
