Sundowns legend Kekana’s advice to Kaizer Chiefs legend Khune

The Sundowns legend once found himself in a similar situation as Chiefs legend Khune, and he had to make a realistic decision.

Mamelodi Sundowns legend Hlompho Kekana has weighed in on the future of Kaizer Chiefs legend Itumeleng Khune and shared his advice.

Khune was honoured by Chiefs this past weekend for his 25 years of service – but the veteran goalkeeper made it clear that it wasn’t a farewell.

He still believes he has a few more years in him as a player, and that has caused confusion among the Chiefs fans as to whether or not he will stay.

When Chiefs offered Khune the current one-year deal, they announced that this was his final contract with them.

But Khune is not ready to quit the game he’s been involved in for 20 years as a professional, but Kekana was honest in his opinion of the situation.

And that’s because Kekana found himself in a similar situation three years ago when he had served Sundowns with distinction for 10 years but suddenly disappeared.

Kekana eventually retired from the game and ventured into Television where he’s a football analyst for SABC Sport after being in denial with reality for some time.

Now, he has reminded Khune that he cannot play forever while also advising him to leave the game he loves dearly before he hates it.

“I wish he could understand and face the reality that he will never play forever,” Kekana said on SABC’s SoccerZone.

“At this stage that he finds himself in, one would say leave the game before you start hating the game.

“The reality says the system doesn’t want you anymore. So, when the system doesn’t want you anymore, make sure that you move. You don’t want to watch football one day and hate it.”

KHUNE HAS NO POINT TO PROVE TO ANYONE – KEKANA

Furthermore, Kekana feels Khune has no point to prove to anyone by continuing to play at the highest level having achieved so much in his career.

He made mentioned of some of Khune’s achievements, including playing and captaining Bafana Bafana as well as wining the league with Chiefs.

And here, Kekana wanted to challenge Khune to perhaps revisit his decision to want to continue playing even though it’s clear he’s no longer wanted at Chiefs as a player.

Khune previously said he wants to play until he’s at least 40 years old, and with three years or so before that age, he may need to leave Chiefs if he wants to play further.

“He played for Bafana; he captained the Kaizer Chiefs team, which won the league. I mean, he has done so much. What point does he want to prove, and to whom?” asked Kekana in conclusion.
