The South African exclusively reported that Sundowns are drawing closer to clinching a deal for Cape Town City’s prolific forward, Khanyisa Mayo. By outpacing rival interests from Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, and international suitors. And the latest on City’s stance is encouraging as the transfer market opens. 

Mayo’s impressive form captivates top clubs

The 25-year-old striker’s stellar performance in the 2023/2024 season. Going on to score 10 goals and shared the top scorer title with Peter Shalulile in the previous season. This has made him a prime target for top clubs in South Africa and abroad. Mayo’s impressive form has caught the attention of European scouts, with Club Brugge and other Belgian clubs showing interest. However no real contact has been made from clubs abroad.

However, recent reports indicate that Mamelodi Sundowns are progressing towards securing Mayo’s services, with a lucrative offer on the table.

Cape Town City chairman John Comitis has set a valuation exceeding R30 million for Mayo. Complicating negotiations with potential suitors like Club Brugge, who find the asking price steep. Sundowns’ coach Rhulani Mokwena identified Mayo as a key signing to bolster their attack, and the club is willing to break the bank to secure his services. Whether Mokwena will be around to coach him remains to be seen.

The latest is that Cape Town City has had a change of heart. Now, they are willing to let Mayo leave if someone meets their asking price. We still don’t know who will meet the valuation. Mamelodi Sundowns might become Mayo’s new team, but they haven’t finalized the deal yet.
