Stellenbosch FC vs Chippa United: PSL Match Report

Stellies were the better side out of the gate with a lively Wassem Isaacs seemingly keen to mark his return to the starting line-up with a goal.

In the 16th minute, Isaacs made good on his threatening displays in the first fifteen minutes of the match after a long throw-in caused chaos in the Chilli Boys area.

Stellies kept pressing Chippa, and Veli Mothwa needed to be at his sharpest to deny Isaacs a second on the half-hour mark.

Mothwa denied Ryan Moon moments later, and the Chippa United keeper was responsible for keeping his side in the game at only 1-0 down at the break. Leletu Skelem had a chance to double the hosts’ lead in the 42d minute but couldn’t take his chance.

Chippa could have levelled themselves, but Lee Langeveldt got down to smother Mbenyane’s diving header.

Half-time

Thokozani Sekotlong was the first to threaten the goal in the second half, but his free-kick could only find the side netting.

Skelem then wasted a golden opportunity to make the game safe for Steve Barker’s Stellies, but the forward fired his shot across the face of goal after beating Mothwa to a floated ball into the box.

With the match heading towards a Stellies victory, Barker’s side tried to park the bus at the death, but in a nervy stoppage time display they couldn’t hang on. A long ball into the box fell to Sekotlong who showed great determination and squeezed his shot between Langeveldt’s legs for a share of the spoils.
