Should Chiefs go for Kapinga?

Lesedi Kapinga is now a free agent after Mamelodi Sundowns ‘refused’ to exercise the option to extend his contract last month.

Former Black Leopards and Mamelodi Sundowns winger Lesedi Kapinga is now a free agent.

The 28-year-old parted ways with the Brazilians a few weeks ago after the club decided not to extend his contract.

His agent Mushe Mudau said the dribbling wizard has not receive any offers yet.

Kapinga could be an option for Molefi Ntseki

“For now, I just want to thank Sundowns for the good way they treated him,” he told FARPost

“Kapinga’s relationship with Sundowns finished on 30 June, they [Sundowns] didn’t exercise the option,” Mudau confirmed.

Kapinga joined Sundowns in 2020 on a three-year deal with an option to extend by another two seasons but his time at the club saw him only make 39 appearances in three years. He scored four goals and provided seven assists duiring his stay.

Former Kaizer Chiefs player Junior Khanye has urged his former team to sign the Bafana Bafana player.

Kapinga was part of the Bafana squad that played in this year’s COSAFA Cup.

“Chiefs have been signing the wrong players. At Sundowns, there are players that are not used and Chiefs have the money to sign them,” Khanye told FARPost. The club needs to sign Kapinga, players like Sphelele Mkhulise and Mosa Lebusa.

“I mean Kapinga is a quality player and Chiefs should go for him. They were supposed to sign Haashim Domingo and Khanyisa Mayo as well, not Pule Mmodi.

“Why sign Mmodi and Mduduzi Mdantsane? Mmodi is 30 and Mdantsane is the same type of player as Nkosingiphile Ngcobo.”

If Chiefs need pace and depth, then Kapinga is a player to sign. So far, the club has recruited seven players ahead of next season so bringing in a player like Kapinga looks good on paper but will he play regularly?

The winger didn’t set the Cosafa Cup alight and though he looked good at times on the ball, his poor finishing, lack of team play, and inability to help out in defence was his downfall.

Kapinga is better off playing for TS Galaxy, Sekhukhune United or AmaZulu. He needs a team that can give him 20 games a season at least but he is less likely to get game time at Chiefs or any big club.
