Shaun Bartlett to keep Cape Town Spurs job – CONFIRMED

Cape Town Spurs chairperson Ari Efsthathiou has confirmed that Shaun Bartlett will retain his position at the newly-promoted DStv Premiership club next season.

Bartlett was unable to secure automatic promotion from the Motsepe Foundation Championship, but managed to steer his side through the promotion/relegation playoffs where they saw off Maritzburg United and Casric Stars.

Cape Town Spurs make their return to the South African top-flight for the first time since 2018, when the club was known as Ajax Cape Town.

Speaking after earning promotion, a delighted Efsthathiou explained that he was happy with his technical team.

He told SuperSport: “I am happy with the job done by Shaun Bartlett, Nazeer Allie and Clayton Daniels who all started their playing careers with us when they were young.

“And now they have helped us today. Shaun started his playing career here a long time ago. He will be here next season. He is not going anywhere.”

Meanwhile, Bartlett was ecstatic to have helped the club achieve its aims, adding: “I said it last week and I will keep saying it, people don’t realise the goodness of God in this team. Everybody thought it was impossible.

“(Being) Faithful in obscurity means public recognition and our players worked hard. I have to thank the management, the players and my technical team.”

Shaun Bartlett, now 50, played 116 matches for Cape Town Spurs between 1992 and 1995.

He also represented Charlton Athletic in England in 105 matches and had stints with Kaizer Chiefs, Bloemfontein Celtic and Colorado Rapids in the USA.

Bartlett played 74 matches in all tournaments for Bafana Bafana, scoring 28 goals, the second most behind Benni McCarthy.
