RIP: Tributes pour in for ex-Chiefs defender Siphiwe Mkhonza

Tributes have poured in for the late Kaizer Chiefs defender Siphiwe Mkhonza, who passed away on Tuesday morning.

Mkhonza’s family ‘confirmed’ that the former Chiefs legend turned analyst was suffering from a kidney infection.

The 44-year-old was admitted at Charlotte Maxeke a month ago and was released after showing signs of recovery, iDiski Times reported.

Unfortunately, he succumbed to his illness after being discharged from the hospital.

Mkhonza began his professional career with Bloemfontein Celtic before moving to Ria Stars in the early 2000s.

He made a name for himself when he joined Kaizer Chiefs in 2004, winning several titles with the Soweto Giants.

After hanging up his boots, the man known as ‘Dr Mnandi’, worked as a TV analyst for the SABC.

Thousands of local football fans took to social media to pay tribute to the former Bafana Bafana defender.

@Christophbongo wrote: “It is indeed a sad morning in my heart & in Mzansians too. We’re saying goodbye to a friend,colleague,& beloved footballer.


“We woke up with the news of his passing of our brother Siphiwe Mkhonza. May his soul rest in peace.A dieu mon frère, repose en paix RIP. Only good memories,” Bongo said in a tweet.

@Cellular_jnr wrote: “I hope the boys today will play for Siphiwe Mkhonza who really loved Kaizer Chiefs from deep down his heart… He was one man who always spoke the truth about South African football and advocating for Kasi football.”
