REVEALED | Why Ronwen Williams rejected Irvin Khoza’s Orlando Pirates offer! 

Ronwen Williams has taken his game to another level since joining Mamelodi Sundowns, but he could’ve easily joined Orlando Pirates instead!

Pirates were profusely linked to Williams, but they never were able to sign the player from SuperSport United, and eventually he joined Sundowns.

Since joining Sundowns, Williams has improved his distribution and playing out from the back, with the coaching staff at Chloorkop demanding that he be the first port of attack. He also became a DStv Premiership champion. Now according to his agent Rob Moore, the amount of possible success he could be a part of at the Brazilians was the reason he decided to stay in Pretoria, instead of Johannesburg to play for Pirates. 

Why Williams turned down Pirates for Sundowns

“Irvin Khoza was really keen to sign Ronwen Williams and he got in a car himself to go meet Ronwen. He laid out what he has on his mind for the player to come to Pirates, I was really impressed by that, I thought it was unbelievable. He [Irvin Khoza] respects the culture with the smallest things. He spoke to Williams and said at the end of the day you’re national team captain, if you join Pirates I need to look at that. That’s something I need to look at with regards to the role you play in my club. That gives you an idea that he’s a guy who looks at bigger things and other things. The bottom line is that he doesn’t mess around. When he wants something he’s someone who’ll negotiate very quickly and get to the bottom of it. In that regard, he’s much quicker than Kaizer Chiefs and Sundowns, that’s why I have a lot of respect for him. To be fair, the questions Williams had 15 to 18 months ago were at that stage Pirates came off a poor season. It was just about where is the ship heading at that time. So that was a question from Ronwen Williams even though the chairman assured him that Pirates means business.” Said Moore to TIA.

Williams will not be regretting his decision, even though Pirates won two domestic titles over the league title Sundowns won. The club still looks in the best shape out of every squad to challenge on all five fronts this season.
