Mokoena only joined Sundowns in the January transfer window of 2022, coming in from crosstown rivals SuperSport United. Before joining the Brazilians, he was also heavily linked with a move to Kaizer Chiefs. They then seemed to fall out of the race, with a club in Belgium joining and competing with Masandawana. In the end, it was the DStv Premiership champions that bid more and ended up getting his signature.

Since joining Sundowns, Mokoena has been a mainstay in their side. He has also been a transformed player under Rulani Mokwena, with his game going to another level. Since joining the club he has won two league titles, MTN8Nedbank Cup and African Football League Cup. Besides Mokwena, he has also found himself as a key cog in Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana midfield.

With Mokoena having Stella performances for Bafana Bafana throughout Afcon, it’s no surprise that he would garner international interest. Last week, this publication reported that he had attracted the interests of a team in England and France. Now, it is expected that, if Sundowns to agree to let him go, it won’t be without a fight.

Sundowns to tie down Mokoena amid European interest?

“They don’t want to let him go. They have taken a step midfield to keep star him Teboho at the team or maybe make him one of the most expensive Mokoena players talks in South Africa by offering him a new three and a half year deal. It’s not just a deal. It’s a very big deal and although he is at Afcon with Bafana Bafana the deal is as good as done. The new deal means he would be at Sundowns until January 2029 if no team can afford him. The club is happy to keep him and that’s why they have given him this big deal to sign,” said a source to Soccer-Laduma.

With Mokoena recently turning 27, a new three-and half year deal could see him spend all his prime years at Sundowns. At the age of 31, it would be unlikely that he would attract the same type of suitors he is thought to be attracting currently.
