During the January transfer window, some reports suggested SuperSport United could lose Mbule “for free” when his deal expires at the end of the current season.

As rumours persisted, the 23-year-old has been accused of a poor attitude aimed at forcing the club to sell him to Amakhosi.

Mbule has two more years on his current contract

However, Matthews has told Soccer Laduma that Mbule was never in line to leave.

“I’ve heard a lot of talk about Chiefs, but we were not formally approached by Chiefs. I can only examine what’s put in front of me and what’s put in writing on the table formally to me, and then I can take it forward and put it to my board. But we have not been in that situation with Kaizer Chiefs with any player,” Matthews said.

“We’ve had talks around Sipho, but we decided as a club that this was not the time we were prepared to let him go. So, there’s no move for him. I think at times it’s destabilising for the players when clubs come along and offer them telephone numbers that’s much bigger than the current contracts they are on. They are looking across and think that the grass is greener on the other side and they start to resent their current club in a way like ‘how can you not let me go?’

“It’s not an admirable situation. It’s something we’ve seen around the world. The minute they are offered something better somewhere else, they fall out of love with their current team and they want out and they want to force a move. Sipho has another two years to run on his contract and unfortunately we are not a club where you can just talk your way out of a contract. You need to earn your move. Teboho (Mokoena) has done that and Sipho has not.”

TRANSFER TALK: PIRATES COULD MAKE LATE BID FOR SURPRISE SIGNING

Importantly, SuperSport do have the option to renew Mbule’s contract, although both parties have until the end of May to exercise that option.
