Patrick Maswanganyi is currently turning up the heat for Orlando Pirates, but could Mamelodi SundownsRonwen Williams be to thank?

Maswanganyi was a surprise signing for Pirates at the start of the season, and has arguably been their standout star.

Joining with fellow attackers in Lesedi Kapinga, Karim Kimvuidi and Katlego Otladisa, Maswanganyi was expected to bide his time. Instead, he was given his chances very early on during Pirates’ pre-season camp in Spain. From there, he impressed coach Jose Riveiro and that earned him a starting berth going into the season.

Maswanganyi has not looked back since, amassing 11 goal contributions and six man of the match awards in 29 matches. He with him slowly gaining cult hero status at Pirates, he is becoming a completely different player to his SuperSport United version. But for many, that’s where they first heard his name and saw him play. Now according to FARPost, former Matsatsantsa skipper, Williams, contributed to that, after four other PSL rejections.

Williams convinced SuperSport to sign Maswanganyi

“At one stage he (Maswanganyi) also started doubting himself because of the rejections. When he came back we took him to Cape Town City and he spent two weeks with them. They didn’t see anything, we took him to Swallows, and Brandon Truter never saw anything. We took him to SuperSport and he spent a year without playing. Every day he never absconded from training. He went there for training without fail. You know who pleaded with Stan Matthews? It was Ronwen Williams, he begged Stan to sign him. Ronwen could see he wasn’t just an ordinary player. At SuperSport they weren’t sure about him.” Said commentator Arnold Rankoko to the publication.

And now, as fate would have it, both Maswanganyi and Williams will finally be teammates. This will be even sweeter for the pair, as it will come at international level, the highest of them all. The Pirates playmaker has been called up for the first time in the Bafana Bafana set up, as they take on Andorra and Algeria.
