A player that just joined Mamelodi Sundowns in a big money transfer last season, could be about to leave.

According to reports, Junior Mendieta is set to leave Sundowns ahead of the next season, with Europe his next destination.

This time last season, Mendieta was the subject of intense speculation from Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. In the end it was the Brazilians that won the signature of the Argentinian from Stellenbosch FC. They were club that moved quickest to activate his release close which was reported to be R12 million.

Mendieta struggled at Sundowns

Since moving to Sundowns, however, Mendieta struggled to establish himself and did not become a regular. This was in part due to injuries as well as the players he is competing with. This being the likes of Themba Zwane, Neo Maema, Siphelele Mkhulise, Gaston Sirino and others. In the end, he did contribute to the club winning both the DStv Premiership and African Football League.

In the 2023/24 season Mendieta played 23 times in all competitions, scoring just the two goals with three assists. His lack of game time during the first half of the season, had the player unhappy and reportedly asking for an exit. It was even reported that the likes of SuperSport United and his former side Stellenbosch FC were interested in signing him. In the end he remained at Sundowns until the end of the season.

Now according to Unplayable, Mendieta may now be on his out of Sundowns, with Greek Super League side Volos NFC.

Set to sign for Volos?
