Siyethemba Sithebe at Chloorkop in a yellow shirt? Mamelodi Sundowns were on the verge of signing the AmaZulu attacking midfielder just before the departure of Pitso Mosimane to Al Ahly.

According to Sithebe’s uncle and agent Sihlangu Sithebe, the two parties held discussions as Mosimane appeared keen to work with the Newcastle-born player.

The revelation comes on the back of ongoing rumours that Sithebe could leave Usuthu for greener pastures with unnamed teams from the Gauteng province reportedly keeping an eye on him.

“I can reveal that we once held talks with Sundowns before Pitso left but those talks stopped when he left the club,” Sithebe told Isolezwe Newspaper.

The football agent, however, made it clear that Sithebe is still committed to AmaZulu and his goal is to help the club do well this season.

Sithebe, 28, turned professional in 2017 but he’s already shown signs of an experienced PSL campaigner.

He has been a regular since his arrival from Mbombela three years ago, and he is now one of Benni McCarthy’s trusted players at AmaZulu this season.

His four assists and two goals in 30 appearances across all competitions during the 2018-19 season, and the Durban-based outfit moved swiftly to offer him an improved contract in an attempt to ward off interest from the big clubs. He is still contracted to Usuthu until June 2022.

Last season, Sithebe featured in all 30 league games for AmaZulu and registered a single goal and an assist.

He has already opened his goalscoring account this season with one strike and two assists in the 14 matches that he has played thus far.
