Orlando Pirates star bags handsome reward despite loss

Despite coming out on the losing side this evening, Orlando Pirates star Thembinkosi Lorch will be smiling all the way to the bank

Orlando Pirates returned to action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to face Richards Bay FC in a crunch Carling Knockout Cup quarterfinal clash.

Despite both sides creating a number of chances at the Moses Mabhida Stadium, neither side managed to break the deadlock during regular time.

The match then proceeded to extra-time before penalties were to decide the winner. Unfortunately for Jose Riveiro’s side, the lottery of the penalty shootout was against them with Richards Bay picking up a 5-4 victory.

Despite the loss, Orlando Pirates star Thembinkosi Lorch walked away R100 000 richer after being voted as the Man Of The Match.

Orlando Pirates star banks R200 000 in Carling Cup

It wasn’t the first Man of The Match award for Lorch, the diminutive winger walked away with the award in his side’s Carling Knockout Cup round of 16 victory over Cape Town Spurs. In total, Thembinkosi Lorch has banked R200 000 in prize money.

“The league is the most important competition, it goes without saying,” Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro said as quoted by TimesLive.

“Thirty games, 15 away and home against everyone in every circumstance, hot and raining. So, it’s the most important competition and we really want to find our rhythm there.

“Now we have played our fourth competition in two months and a half. We are trying to keep the level in all competitions we play. It is difficult mentally to face these kinds of competitions in a very short space of time.”
