Orlando Pirates have successfully secured Gilberto from Petro De Luanda, beating out competition from several other clubs, including Sivasspor, Raja Athletic Club, CR Belouizdad, AS FAR, MKE Ankaragücü, and Club Dynamo Makhachkala.

Gilberto, 23, showcased his skills at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), helping Angola reach the quarter-finals.

The winger’s buy-out clause was originally set at $750 000 (R13.6 million) before the deal, but after negotiations, Pirates and Petro De Luanda reached an agreement allowing Gilberto to travel to South Africa for further discussions on personal terms.

Talks are now underway for a long-term contract, which highlights Gilberto’s potential to shine in the Buccaneers’ squad as one of Africa’s brightest talents.

Patrick Maswanganyi’s rise: Farouk Khan’s insights

Meanwhile, in other Orlando Pirates news, Stars of Africa Academy director and coach Farouk Khan has provided insights into Patrick Maswanganyi’s growth at Pirates.

Khan, who mentored Maswanganyi during his early career at Stars of Africa Academy, emphasised Maswanganyi’s development into a key player at Pirates since joining SuperSport United.

Maswanganyi, 26, has made a significant impact in his first season at Pirates, featuring in 40 appearances across all competitions, scoring 10 goals, and providing 12 assists.
