ORLANDO PIRATES SIGNING OF THE DAY: MPHO GIFT LEREMI

Today’s featured transfer is a player who still brings tears to the eyes of some Bucs fans. The name is Mpho Gift Leremi.

Leremi, known as “Vum Vum,” which refers to a fast and powerful car from the song by the late Kwaito star Brown Dash and the king Mdu Masilela.

The winger was a Pirates fan-favourite until he broke their hearts with a move to Mamelodi Sundowns in July 2007.

TRAGEDY

The morning of 4 September 2007 was the moment South African fans woke up to the tragic news. Leremi had died in a car crash.

His white BMW 3 Series suffered a collision in Alberton, Gauteng – killing Leremi at the young age of 24.

“Vum Vum” earned 23 national U23 caps and four Bafana Bafana appearances but sadly died days before Sundowns lifted the SAA Supa 8.

Meanwhile, Jose Riveiro’s side is preparing for the second-round CAFCL preliminary competition.

Pirates will make a short trip to Botswana to battle Jwaneng on Sunday, 17 September.
