Orlando Pirates face goalkeeper crisis ahead of Swallows showdown

Orlando Pirates find themselves in something of a crisis at goalkeeper following their CAF Confederation Cup clash against ES Setif.

Orlando Pirates find themselves in something of a crisis at goalkeeper following their CAF Confederation Cup clash against ES Setif on Wednesday.

The Buccaneers suffered a huge blow when goalkeeper Siyabonga Mpontshane was stretchered from the field during the first half with what looked like a serious injury.

The Soweto giants are now left with only one fit goalkeeper in Wayne Sandilands after Richard Ofori also suffered an injury – ironically also against ES Setif in their away fixture last month and hasn’t featured since.

Orlando Pirates could be forced to summon their DStv Diski Challenge goalkeeper Elson Sithole ahead of their DStv Premiership match against Swallows this weekend.

Buccaneers coach Josef Zinnbauer did nothing to allay fans’ fears when he confirmed that Mpontshane’s injury “does not look too good” but could not say for certain whether he would be available for the weekend’s match.

“With Mpontshane, I don’t know 100 percent what happened, but it looks not good,” the German told the media.

Orlando Pirates are currently in fourth place in the log and will play fifth-placed Swallows on Saturday, 24 April at the Dobsonville Stadium.

Kick-off is at 17:00.
