New Orlando Pirates signing receives red card on debut! 

Orlando Pirates were able to get their preparations for the new season, off to a winning start, after beating Israeli giants Maccabi Tel Aviv 1-0 in Thursday’s friendly.

Pirates and Tel Aviv clashed at the Marbella state of the art training facilities that they both share in Spain, yesterday, and tampers flared. 

Baloni gets a red card for Pirates

Pirates spotted at least two new signings in the game, with midfielder Siphelo Baloni and Patrick Maswanganyi making their unofficial debuts for the club. While it would end in joy for one of them, the same could not be said about the other. Maswanganyi’s first goal for the Buccaneers ended up proving to be the winner for them over Tel Aviv, but Baloni received his first red card in his new colours.

Baloni was shown his marching orders by the referee after committing what was deemed to be a dangerous tackle on Tel Aviv star Milson. And in a match that was supposed to be a friendly game, it looks likes the players may have forgotten all about the friendly nature of the game. That is because, prior to that, Tel Aviv player Derrick Luckassen also saw red, meaning both them and Pirates ended the game with 10 men.

It was certainly not the start that Baloni had dreamed of in a Pirates jersey, nor the one he would like to remember, but the result will definitely make it better. The fact that he is still going to make the debut that counts for his new club will also provide him with some solace. It is unclear how long he was on the pitch for before getting the red card, however.

For Maswanganyi, although an official debut and goal for Pirates, it will go a long way in boosting his confidence and impressing his new coach Jose Riveiro, as he faces some still competition next season.
