All four Nedbank Cup semi-finalists secured R1 million in prize money at the very least. Kaizer Chiefs, Sekhukhune, Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch will all be eyeing out the biggest prize though.

Kaizer Chiefs and Pirates meet in Nedbank Cup Soweto Derby

Chiefs and Pirates meet again on May 6th to battle for a place in the final. Meanwhile, in the other semifinal, relative minnows Stellenbosch and Sekhukhune battle it out. The two winning semi-finalists will already guaranteed R2.5 million prize money. The eventual winners will bank the R7 million prize. With defending champion Sundowns having been knocked out, 2023 will see a new champion.

Nedbank Cup prize money breakdown

  • Champions: R7 million
  • Losing finalists: R2.5 million
  • Semi-finalists: R1 million
  • Quarter-finalists: R400,000
  • Round of16: R200,000
  • Round of 32: R100,000

Stellenbosch and Sekhukhune have reached this stage of the competition for the first time in their respective histories while Orlando Pirates have won it twice since 2008. Chiefs have lifted the trophy once since Nedbank took over sponsorship rights in that year.

Soweto Derby looms large

The Glamour Boys have been the overwhelmingly dominant force in recent meetings with their fiercest rivals. A sixth Soweto Derby win on the bounce would take them to the Nedbank Cup final, which would be something for Chiefs fans to shout about in an otherwise frustrating campaign.
