Former Bafana Bafana striker Katlego Mphela has questioned Hugo Broos’ decision to snub Cape Town City star player Khanyisa Mayo.

The 25-year-old was overlooked in favour of Orlando Pirates duo of Evidence Makgopa and Zakhele Lepasa ahead of the African Cup of Nations.

Speaking to FARPost, the ex-Mamelodi Sundowns goal poacher said it was unfair to leave out Mayo in the Afcon team.

Mayo has scored more goals than both of Makgopa and Lepasa in the last two seasons and many fans thought the forward would be in Broos final 23-men squad.

“When you are a fan from the outside, it doesn’t make sense,” said Mphela told FARPost.

“But I think it also happened with us or with me when you had players who scored more goals. Maybe the system the coach wants to play suits Makgopa and Lepasa more.

Katlego ‘Killer’ Mphela feels sorry for Mayo after Afcon snub

“For Mayo, I don’t think it’s fair for him to be left out. Especially with his performance now that he has been producing. He deserves to be in the national team.”

Mphela though did say that perhaps Broos has a plan and leaving out Mayo was more of a tactical decision.

“But national teams are like that. Some get call-ups, and some don’t get call-ups. There will always be debates. Just like I said, maybe the coach knows what he’s doing.

“At the moment, it seems like he has more faith in Makgopa and Lepasa. So, it’s an interesting one to see,” said Mphela.
