Motjeka Madisha’s funeral turns ugly as police arrest player’s father

Motjeka Madisha’s father has been found guilty of contravening Covid-19 regulations at his son’s funeral on Saturday.

According to the Kickoff website, Bethuel Madisha was set to appear at the Lebowakgomo Magistrate’s Court on Monday on two charges after police said he contravened the country’s rules and regulations regarding funerals.

Madisha snr also reportedly resisted arrest after the funeral of his son, the late Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana star Motjeka Madisha, in Ga-Madisha village.

Motjeka Madisha, or “Ace” as he was affectionately known, lost his life in a car accident on 12 December 2020.

Madisha died exactly one month prior to his 26th birthday.

The accident, which took place on the Zuurfontein Road near Chloorkop, also claimed the life of Motjeka Madisha’s childhood friend, Thabang Martin Kakase.

Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) arrived at the Madisha homestead armed with rifles and threatened to arrest Bethuel Madisha for breaking the Covid-19 protocol.

Bethuel Madisha avoided jail-time by paying a fine of R2 500 after it was found that more than 50 people attended the burial.

The charge for resisting arrest was later dropped.

Mogatle Police Station spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed that Bethuel Madisha was found guilty of contravening Covid-19 protocols.

“The police attended to the matter and have taken action against the family,” Mojapelo told the Kickoff website.

“This is following a huge number of mourners who attended the funeral in contravention of the regulations under the Disaster Management Act as adjusted under lockdown alert level three.”

Motjeka Madisha played his final Mamelodi Sundowns match in their 3-0 DStv Premiership win over Stellenbosch FC on 28 November 2020. The match was his 99th domestic appearance for the Brazilians. .

In those 99 matches, Madisha scored three goals.

He also played 24 matches and scored three goals in the CAF Champions League bringing his total for Mamelodi Sundowns to 123 matches and six goals.

Motjeka Madisha represented South Africa at all age group levels and played seven matches for Bafana Bafana scoring one goal which came in the 3-0 victory over Botswana in the 2018 COSAFA Cup.
