Kaizer Chiefs title hopes may rest mostly on the hands of others than their own, and coach Ernst Middendorp has pinned his hopes on the frontrunners dropping points as the PSL season draws to a close.

Amakhosi remain seventh on the log after playing to a one-all draw against Supersport United at Mbombela Stadium on Friday night, and are seven points behind log-leaders Mamelodi Sundowns, who also have a game in hand.

With just six games left for the Soweto giants to play, their league position may paint a picture of their first league title since 2015 slipping away, but the German is banking on their relatively easy fixture list playing to their favour.

One of Sundowns and Orlando Pirates is guaranteed to drop points when the two sides meet at Orlando Stadium in April, while the latter still has dates with Cape Town City, Bidvest Wits and Polokwane City – all title contenders.

Middendorp rates Chiefs’ title hopes

Speaking after the 1-1 draw against Supersport, the Chiefs coach expressed disappointment at not managing to get closer to the summit of the table, but indicated that he is hoping that the league schedule will play to his side’s advantage.

“Orlando Pirates must still play Bidvest Wits and if I’m not mistaken Orlando Pirates must still play Mamelodi Sundowns,” Middendorp said.

Chiefs have tough fixtures of their own – albeit in a different competition – as they are preparing to meet Cape Town City in their Nedbank Cup quarterfinal on Saturday, 31 March.

Middendorp added;

“We delivered a draw as two teams sitting a bit behind but at the same time if they deliver a draw and we are capable to win our games … let’s wait and see what happens.

“We are going from game to game, and our next big target is now, of course, the cup game on March 31 and we will do everything to be well prepared and deliver a good performance on the field and be successful.”
