Maritzburg United shocking revelation sparks controversy

Maritzburg United chairman Farook Kadodia has firmly dismissed rumours surrounding his interest in acquiring Moroka Swallows’ PSL status.

The Team of Choice faced relegation to the Motsepe Foundation Championship last season after more than a decade in top-flight football.

Following their 15th-place finish and relegation via promotional play-offs against Cape Town Spurs, Maritzburg United finds themselves in 11th place with 20 points at the midway point of the 2023/24 Motsepe Foundation Championship season—trailing table-toppers Orbit College FC by 10 points.

Responding to their lackluster start, the KwaZulu-Natal-based club has recently parted ways with head coach Zipho Dlangalala.

Amidst financial turmoil and reports of unpaid salaries at Swallows, rumors surfaced suggesting Maritzburg United as potential frontrunners to secure the club’s status. 

Kadodia addressed rumours instantly 

However, Kadodia swiftly dismissed such claims in an interview with iDiski Times, stating, “We haven’t had any engagements or discussions about that. Swallows must sort out their own life.”

Highlighting the challenges in the current mid-season scenario, Kadodia emphasized, “It’s mid-season now, it is quite difficult to get a franchise right now, to be fair to you. At the end of the season, yes, we can look at it. 

“For now, we will try to gain promotion from the Motsepe Foundation Championship.”

In navigating the uncertainties, Maritzburg United remains focused on their immediate goal of securing promotion while dismissing any talks of acquiring Swallows’ status at this juncture. 

The chairman’s words underline the club’s commitment to addressing challenges on the field before contemplating any future acquisitions in the PSL.
