Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund has credited Mzansi football legend Benni McCarthy with the Premier League team’s improved scoring. The club’s website has quoted an interview the Danish forward had with BT news outlet on the impact of the South African.

How Benni McCarthy contributed to United’s win over Liverpool

Hojlund was reportedly responding to a question on how United managed to beat Liverpool 4-3 last Sunday. He mentioned the impact of Benni McCarthy after the Red Devils came from behind twice to win the FA Cup quarterfinal match. The Dane did not score in the match. However, his teammates Scott Mc Tominay, Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Amad were on target. Alexis Mac Allister, Mohamed Salah, and Harvey Elliot netted for Liverpool in the match which went into extra-time at Old Trafford.

What the conversation between Benni McCarthy and United strikers focused on

The Red Devils leading scorer Hojlund said the team’s strikers had a lengthy meeting with the United strikers’ coach McCarthy. He said such an honest conversation helped them overcome Liverpool.

“You could say that we have found each other better,” he told BT. “We have had some forwards’ meetings with Benni McCarthy, where we talked about things. It wasn’t just me and two others. It was everyone from the front line who attended the meeting.”

Hojlund discloses what the meeting was all about

Hojlund added: “We talked about playing each other [in] well and helping each other; because that’s the way we will get the best results. We saw some video clips, and then there was a reference to the fact that, here and there, some things should be done better. We could see that and then we have carried it out on the field, in training and matches.”

Hojlund granted BT the interview while on duty with Denmark during the international window. He also touched on his earlier struggles at United and how he overcame them.

“I try to train well and prepare every single day,” he said. “I train on both my strengths and weaknesses. I have gotten better and better. I have had a good month [or so] but it has been the result of good work over a long period. It clicks a little better than at the start of the Premier League season.”

Benni McCarthy secured a dream job at United in 2022 when he was appointed a first-team coach specifically for strikers. It was a dramatic return to Europe for the 45-year-old who made a name in the top football leagues.  The former Orlando Pirates forward made a name when he scored twice to help Porto beat then Alex Ferguson-led United in the 2003/04 Uefa Champions League knockout stages. The Portuguese team went on to win the ultimate championship that year.

What the Bafana Bafana legend said after joining the Premier League giants

Benni McCarthy told United’s website that he was a boyhood fan of the team. Meanwhile, the former Porto striker has been touted as the potential successor for Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos.

The legendary forward’s playing career also took him to Ajax Cape Town, Ajax Amsterdam, Blackburn Rovers, West Ham United, and Pirates. He cut his coaching teeth at Cape Town City before parting ways with the club. McCarthy then secured a job with AmaZulu then left Usuthu after two seasons.
