Defending DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns will host Kaizer Chiefs at the Lucas Masterpiece Moripe Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.

Masandawana comes into the game as favourites having beaten Chiefs twice last season in the league and will aim to put more misery on their struggling rivals. Rulani Mokwena’s side won their opening league match 2-1 against Sekhukhune United last week while Amakhosi played to a goalless draw with Chippa United in their opener.

Compared to Sundowns, Chiefs are the team under pressure and need to win Wednesday’s match to give fans hope this season. Their uninspiring draw on Sunday put pressure on new coach Molefi Ntseki, who is still trying to find the right combinations.

A draw for Ntseki is still a good result considering the strength and calibre of their opponents especially this time of the season. Sundowns are a team to beat and have a good and balanced squad that is not only good enough to win the PSL but also to conquer Africa.

Downs and Chiefs Head-to-Head record

Games between Chiefs and Sundowns have always been tight and on Wednesday, expect another mouth-watering encounter. In their past 37 league meetings, Sundowns have won 14, compared to Chiefs’ 13 and 10 other matches ended in a draw.

In the 19 games that Downs played at home, they only won eight. Amakhosi have a good away record against the Brazilians, with seven wins in the 19 games and that alone should give them the motivation.

A win for Sundowns will see them top the log standings while a draw could see them drop out of the top 3. Chiefs need a win to chase the top spot but a draw could also do them justice.

The match takes place on Wednesday at 15:00.
