Mamelodi Sundowns latest: South American import set to depart

Sundowns are reported to be close to releasing one of their South American import who has done very little for the team since his arrival.

Mamelodi Sundowns are reported to be close to releasing one of their South American import who has done very little for the team since his arrival.

Erwin Saavedra is believed to be living on borrowed time at Sundowns, and his relationship with the club could come to an end in June.

Saavedra arrived at Chloorkop two seasons ago, but he has somehow been unfortunate with long-term injuries, and thus spending the majority of time in the stands.

He had a promising career with Sundowns in his first few months but he contributed little towards the team’s success over the past few months.

Sundowns are expected to reinforce their squad ahead of next season, and among those coming in could be foreign internationals.

And releasing Saavedra would allow Sundowns some space to sign whoever they bring in from outside the country.

The news of Saavedra possibly leaving Sundowns are reported by Transfermarkt, who claim the Bolivian attacker was bought for R12 million.

“He’ll be released at the end of the season,” said a source known to Transfermarkt.

SAAVEDRA NOT THE ONLY SOUTH AFRICAN PLAYER TO FLOP AT MAMELODI SUNDOWNS

While there has been so many successful South American players at Sundowns, Saavedra will not be the only one deemed a flop in recent years.

In 2019, Sundowns recruited Argentina midfielder Emiliano Tade from AmaZulu but his stint was short-lived as he struggled for game time.

Mauricio Affonso was also unfortunate to last a mere two seasons between 2019 and 2021 at Sundowns, but with him, injuries were the biggest factor for his departure.

He had made meaningful contributions both in the Telkom Knockout Cup and CAF Champions League but then spent most of the time nursing injuries.
