PHILADELPHIA UNION BEAT MAMELODI SUNDOWNS TO OLWETHU MAKHANYA

Following a superb debut season of 24 games aged 18 in Stellenbosch’s central defence after making his move from Marumo Gallant’s reserve team, the 19-year-old Makhanya has moved to the states.

The move was announced by his new club via Twitter on Tuesday.

“Philadelphia Union announced today that they have signed defender Olwethu Makhanya from Stellenbosch FC to a two-and-a-half-year contract.

“With this acquisition, Makhanya will be the Union’s first player under the league’s U-22 initiative,” the report said.

“He’s an athletic, explosive player who is able to play center back in a back four line, as well as a back three. His instincts on the field fit our aggressive style of play and we look forward to welcoming him to the club,” the club’s Sporting Director, Ernst Tanner added.

THAPELO MASEKO JOINS THE CHAMPIONS

Meanwhile, Sundowns have beaten Belgian side Westerlo to Thapelo Maseko from SuperSport United.

Having made his name last season, including a few Bafana Bafana call-ups, the 19-year-old winger has joined Kabo Yellow in Chloorkop, beating Belgian club Westerlo with bigger fee offer.

“The wait is over!. 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗬𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻, 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲𝗹𝗼 𝗠𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗸𝗼!” Sundowns announced via Twitter.

“Masandawana, let’s make our new signing feel at home and show him how it feels to be part of our family!”

Maseko joins the versatile Lesiba Nku (27) from Marumo Gallants, Junior Mendieta (30), and Lucas Ribeiro Costa (24) from Brazil among the new faces at Sundowns.
