LISTED: Mamelodi Sundowns’ league titles compared to Chiefs and Pirates

They’ve done it again. Mamelodi Sundowns are the DStv Premiership champions after drawing with Cape Town City on Wednesday night.

Mamelodi Sundowns are the best team on the land, this has been the same fact for five seasons in a row. What a dynasty!

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS WIN THE PREMIER SOCCER LEAGUE

Following Kaizer Chiefs’ 2-1 loss to Golden Arrows on Wednesday, and Royal AM’s goalless draw last Sunday, Sundowns needed just a single point against Cape Town City on Wednesday to win the league.

The club known as Ka Bo Yellow earned exactly that after a goalless draw at the Loftus Versfeld. The result confirmed the Tshwane giants as the 2021/22 champions and for the fifth season on the trot.

Now let’s look at how many PSL titles Sundowns have bagged compared to the country’s top two most followed clubs Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. Are the Soweto giants still Mzansi’s supremos? Only historically and based on supporter numbers yes.

HOW CHIEFS AND PIRATES COMPARE WITH LEAGUE TITLES

The Premier Soccer League has gone through its fair share of formats and name changes, but it still remains clear when the first competition started. 

According to a report from iDiskiTimes, the first campaign was in 1971 as the NPSL

So whose lifted the most titles? Sundowns lead the pack with 15 league titles. 

Here are the top three clubs and number of titles won:

  1. Sundowns – 15 titles
  2. Chiefs – 12 titles
  3. Pirates – Nine titles.

Meanwhile, the champions still have four more games before the official end of the season. 

There is also a treble at stake. 

Sundowns have already won the MTN8 and PSL title, while they will still play a Nedbank Cup semi-final against Royal AM next weekend.
