Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ismail Watenga is edging closer to another move away from the club.

The talented Ugandan shot-stopper is reportedly training with Golden Arrows ahead of next season.

Watenga spent the previous two campaigns out on loan (at Chippa United and Marumo Gallants).

He’s expected to follow in the footsteps of the iconic Denis Onyango at the Brazilians however he’ll have to patiently prove his worth away from the club, much like Onyango!

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper training with Arrows?

“While Mamelodi Sundowns are in the pre-season camp in the Netherlands, Watenga has been training with Lamontville Golden Arrows. Abafana Bes’thende are seemingly looking to add the 28-year-old at their disposal ahead of the 2023/24 season.” a FARPost report read.

Rhulani Mokwena has openly expressed his desire for Watenga to follow in the footsteps of fellow compatriot Denis Onyango.

“It took Onyango time to stamp his position at Mamelodi Sundowns. We all remember that he went to Mpumalanga Black Aces and Bidvest Wits on loan before he came back and became Sundowns’ number one goalkeeper.” Mokwena told IOL last year.

“He came back and has been very successful. Maybe Watenga’s success lies in the journey of Onyango and he will need to pick up a little bit more from what Onyango went through.”
