Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Cavin Johnson is set to stay with the club after his contract as interim coach ended last month.

The 65-year-old took over the reins back in October last year. According to iDiski Times, Amakhosi have decided to keep Johnson and the former Platinum Stars coach will go back to his role as Head of Academy. Big changes are happening at Chiefs with the new technical team coming.

Kaizer Chiefs appear to be happy with Cavin Johnson’s role of overseeing their youth academy. He was appointed in that position last year but a few months later, the club elevated him to head coach after the sacking of Molefi Ntseki. Johnson’s tenure began with four wins in seven games before the Africa Cup of Nations break. At the time, the club appeared to be happy with the ex-SuperSported United coach.

After the Afcon break, Johnson failed to ignite the club and only claimed two wins in 2024. As interim coach, he did not have a mandate but many of the club’s fans were expecting him to at least finish in the top eight. Amakhosi went into the last game needing just a win to secure the top eight but a 2-0 defeat to Cape Town Spurs summed up their dreadful season.

Cavin Johnson was not solely blamed for Kaizer Chiefs’ downfall. The club management and to some extent, the players took most of the blame. The management has at times accused of not buying quality players and bringing in top coaches. That is set to change however with Tunisian coach Nasreddine Nabi taking over as head coach next week.

Nabi is certainly a good fit for Kaizer Chiefs and more successful than Cavin Johnson. The former Yanga coach is expected to bring along his own technical team at Naturena.
