Mamelodi Sundowns are making great progress in their preparations for life after Pitso Mosimane’s golden team.

Sundowns have dominated local soccer over the past five years however Mosimane’s side now face the common enemy of every great sporting team: age.

Mosimane’s aging stars

The former CAF Champions League winners have a large percentage of key players over the age of 30 and Mosimane is now looking to recruit younger players to keep the team successful in the long run.

  • Dennis Onyango (35)
  • Ricardo Nascimento (33)
  • Wayne Arendse (35)
  • Kennedy Mweene (35)
  • Tebogo Langerman (34)
  • Anele Ngcongca (32)
  • Andile Jali (30)
  • Tiyani Mabunda (32)
  • Hlompho Kekana (35)
  • Sibusiso Vilakazi (30)
  • Themba Zwane (30)
  • Anthony Laffor (35)

Sundowns look to future

Mosimane has revealed his intentions of roping in younger players after the club confirmed the signing of 25-year-old Lesedi Kapinga.

“Lesedi is a good young prospect and we are looking at getting as many young players as we can. He fits the programme with his age and the style of play.” – Mosimane told the club’s official website.

Other Sundowns arrivals to balance age books

Sundowns have reportedly reached agreements with a number of rising stars however the club are said to be waiting for the end of the season before officially announcing their signings.

Grant Margeman (22)

The Ajax Cape Town attacking midfielder is set to arrive at Masandawana at the end of the current season. His strong performances at junior international level and in the GladAfrica Championship has left many tipping him to become a future South African star.

Luvuyo Phewa (20)

Sundowns are expected to announce the signing of the Real Kings midfielder at the end of the season. Phewa was a key member of the South Africa under-20 team that took part in the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Poland last year and has been tipped to reach great heights.

Haashim Domingo (24)

Sundowns have reportedly won the race to sign the highly talented Bidvest Wits attacking-midfielder. Domingo has risen to prominence at The Clever Boys over the past two seasons. The demise of Wits will allow for Masandawana to have their man at the end of the season.

Gift Motupa (25)

Sundowns are also reported to have snapped up a lethal forward in Gift Motupa from the Bidvest Wits jumble sale. Motupa has shown glimpses of his capabilities in the past but it remains to be seen whether he’ll fit Mosimane’s midfield orientated style of play.

Ricardo Goss (26)

Goss is another Bidvest Wits player that Sundowns have reportedly signed. The shot-stopper is likely to be Dennis Onyango’s successor at Chloorkop.

Sundowns are also reaping the benefits of a strong academy system with promoted starlets Sphelele Mkhulise (24), Keletso Makgalwa (23), Promise Mkhuma (20) and Nicholas Lukhubeni (24) set to become regular features in the first team going forward.
