Things haven’t gone according to plan for Samkelo Zwane at Kaizer Chiefs this season.

Johnson sings Sithebe’s praises

“I don’t know why he (Sithebe) has played one game. I think since Sunday, he’s been working to play. Today he got his chance; I have to give him 10-out-of-10; he did well today. I hope he stays like this for the next 10 games. I always said this, ‘I will try to give everybody an opportunity while I’m here’. And if they play and do well, it shows you why the club (Chiefs) bought them initially.” Said Johnson according to FARPost.

Samkelo Zwane’s season in a nutshell

22-year-old midfield anchor man Zwane has only featured six times for Chiefs in the league this term. In the weekend’s 0-0 draw with Cape Town City, Amakhosi entrusted Siyethemba Sithebe and Sibongiseni Mthethwa at the base of midfield while Zane was an unused substitute. It’s not a good sign for a player hoping to make more of an impact this term. Against City, Chiefs were without the suspended duo of Yusuf Maart and Edson Castillo. The experienced pair will return against Stellenbosch and likely push Zwane back down the pecking order.

Crunch clash with Stellenbosch looms large

In-form Stellenbosch travels to FNB Stadium high on confidence for their meeting with Chiefs on Tuesday 2 April. Stellies are second on the DStv Premiership log and hold a five-point advantage over Amakhosi with nine games left in the league season. The Winelands outfit, coached by Steve Barker, also have a game in hand over most of their rivals for second place.

Amakhosi fans, who would you rather see at the base of midfield for your club until the end of the campaign? Should the technical team be more willing to take a risk with Zwane rather than play it safe with the experience of Siyethemba Sithebe, who’s out of contract at the end of the season? Let us know in the comments section below.

Chiefs face Stellenbosch on Tuesday 2 April at 19:30 from FNB Stadium.
