Chiefs youngster raises his hand for promotion

There’s a new name in local football. His name is Vicky Mkhawana and plays for Kaizer Chiefs. Here’s why he could be promoted soon…

Kaizer Chiefs and Amajimbos fans went to bed smiling last night, thanks to Vicky Mkhawana’s brace in the AFCON U17 tournament.

KAIZER CHIEFS STRIKER VICKY MKHAWANA INSPIRES AMAJIMBOS

With South Africa desperate for a win after Sunday’s undeserved 2-0 loss to Morocco, Wednesday night’s clash with neigbours Zambia was a do-or-die.

After starting on the bench in the game against Morocco, Chiefs’ Mkhawana started the game before producing a brace that inspired Mzansi to a 3-2 win.

Check out Mkhawana’s goals below, before Michael Dokumnu’s eventual late winner.

Meanwhile, Amajimbos will face Nigeria on Saturday to decide a place in the quarter-finals.

The four teams that will make the semi-finals will qualify for the FIFA U17 World Cup in November, for which the host nation is yet to be confirmed after Peru’s withdrawal.

FORMER AMAKHOSI SKIPPER TO COACH HIS NATION

Former Chiefs skipper Patrick Mabedi is going international. He has been named as Malawi’s assistant coach.

Remember Patrick Mabedi in a Chiefs shirt? Of course, you should. He captained Amakhosi for eight seasons with his shirt always tucked into his shorts.

The news was announced by the Malawi Football Association via social media. The report said the former Chiefs number five will double up as the U20s coach on what is a short-term deal until September 2023.

“FAM has appointed Flames Assistant coach and Under 20 Head Coach Patrick Mabedi as Flames Caretaker coach until September 2023,” the FA said.

“Mabedi will see the team through the two remaining 2023 AFCON Qualifiers against Ethiopia in June and Guinea in September as well as the COSAFA Cup in May,” the note added.
