Kaizer Chiefs lost to Stellenbosch FC on Tuesday, thanks to a well-taken goal by Devin Titus. His coach Steve Barker has created a special campaign for Young Player of the Season.

The 22-year-old former Hellenic winger marked 10 goals and three assists this week after Stellies beat Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 at the FNB Stadium on Tuesday. According to coach Barker, the South Africa U23 international is the best youngster in Mzansi this season.

“The less said [about Stellenbosch FC form] the better, in my opinion, we do business our way and sometimes being under the radar is not a bad thing,” Barker said via FARPost.

“I just look at a player like Devin Titus for example, I have a fear that if you look at his assists and goal scored, he should win the Young Player of the Season if it was tomorrow by a country mile,” the tactician said after the victory over Kaizer Chiefs.

“Whether it will happen I don’t know, but I do feel it’s those types of instances where maybe not enough has been said about some of the achievements of our players and what were are doing as a team.

“But we are not out there to let people see what we are doing by telling them, we just go by business the way we do. I do believe that we’ll get the credit and reward that we deserve,” Barker concluded.

Staying with the Glamour Boys, Amakhosi have confirmed they will continue with Saturday’s fixture after Luke Fleurs was tragically killed on Wednesday in Honeydew, Gauteng.

The 24-year-old central defender was murdered at a petrol station before his attackers escaped with his car. Kaizer Chiefs staff and players held a prayer at Naturena on Thursday. Amakhosi later announced the decision to honour Saturday’s match schedule. The club said the match will be played in honour of Fleurs.

“While the deep sense of shock and sadness pervades throughout the camp from the tragic loss of one of our own, Luke Fleurs, Kaizer Chiefs will nevertheless go ahead and honour their DStv Premiership fixture against Chippa United on Saturday afternoon,” the club said.

“The Kaizer Chiefs players, to a man, have pledged to dedicate the encounter to their fallen comrade, Luke Fleurs, who was expected to travel with the team to the Eastern Cape this weekend,” the report added.

“It is with a great deal of sadness that we announce that Kaizer Chiefs player, Luke Fleurs tragically lost his life last night during a hijacking incident in Johannesburg. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this difficult time. The SAPS are handling the matter and further details will be communicated in due course. May his dear soul rest in peace,” the club confirmed on Thursday.

According to the police report, the incident happened while Luke Fleurs was at a petrol station near his apartment. Two armed men driving a white BMW 1 Series appeared and forced him out of his red VW Golf 8. The Mitchells Plain-born Kaizer Chiefs star was then shot once on the upper body. He was declared dead upon arrival at a local medical centre.

“While waiting to be served by the petrol attendant, he was confronted by two armed males who came driving a white BMW 1 Series. The suspects pointed at him with a firearm and took him out of his vehicle, then shot him once in the upper body,” Police reported on the late Kaizer Chiefs player Luke Fleurs.

“One suspect drove off with the victim’s car, followed by his accomplice. The victim was taken to the nearest medical care centre where he was certified dead on arrival,” the report concluded.
