Kaizer Chiefs may be setting their sights on a former Mamelodi Sundowns star to boost their midfield

Kaizer Chiefs are thought to be on the hunt to reinforce their playing squad, during this transfer window and the next.

Chiefs are currently sixth on the DStv Premiership log, at the half way stage of the season, with interim coach Cavin Johnson dismissing the possibility of new signings.

Johnson has often alluded to the media that, he believes in the current crop of players he has inherited at Chiefs, and just needs more time to coach them, rather than go into the market. With that being said, he would be the first to understand the level of expectations at the club, both from the fans and the management, and if he is to be honest, he would know the squad needs to be reinforced.

So far during this transfer window, Chiefs have been linked with the likes of Fawaaz Basadien from Stellenbosch FC, Oswin Appollis of Polokwane City as well as Riaan Hanamub of AmaZulu. Another player that was linked with the club is Swedish based attacking midfielder Tashreeq Matthews. In the goal keeping department, they have also been heavily linked to Nigerian international goalkeeper Stanley Nwabili.

Midfield has not been a position with too many links, however, but that has now changed. According to the latest reports. It is now believed that Chiefs are in the hunt to sign a former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Siphesihle Mkhize

Chiefs monitor former Sundowns star Mkhize

“It’s a tricky situation for Sekhukhune United. The boy (Mkhize) just joined from Sundowns and now another big team is interested in him. What do you do in such a situation? I know he is a great young player at 24 and he has a great future whether at Sekhukhune or at Chiefs.” Said one source to Soccer-Laduma.

Another source weighed in on the potential of Mkhize joining Chiefs.

January deal on the cards?

“I am not sure whether it’s for January or at the end of the season but they (Chiefs) have shown interest in him (Mkhize). The club has been looking at him since the start of the season so I am not sure what will happen at the moment. So let’s wait until this window closes and see what will come up,” she said.

It would be a surprise if Sekhukhune do allow Mkhize to leave for Chiefs in the January transfer window, with a end of season move making more sense. The 24-year-old signed a three-year-deal from Sundowns ahead of the current campaign.
