Following an underwhelming 2021/22 season in which he made just two league starts, Akuma is not believed to be in interim Amakhosi coaches Arthur Zwane and Dillon Sheppard’s plans for next season.

Mind you, whether Zwane and Sheppard themselves are in Kaizer Chiefs’ plans for next season remains to be seen!

Akumu signed from Zambian side ZESCO United during Ernst Middendorp’s spell in charge at Naturena in January 2020 and featured regularly under the German coach.

This season Akumu has started just two of nine total DStv Premiership appearances with his most recent start coming on 28 November 2021 against Swallows FC when Stuart Baxter was still in charge.

Akumu enjoyed all of his game time this season under Baxter and was also used frequently by Gavin Hunt last season.

When Zwane and Sheppard took over from Hunt last season, Akumu didn’t feature and was only used when Baxter arrived at the club.

According to Kickoff, the only potential sticking point in offloading Akumu is that he still has a year remaining on his current deal.

Akumu has played 47 matches for Kaizer Chiefs

The 29-year-old will be placed on the transfer list if no agreement can be reached in terminating his existing contract.

In total he has represented Kaizer Chiefs on 47 occasions and scored two goals since signing 28 months ago.

Akumu has also made 45 appearances for his native Kenya in all competitions.
