The club isn’t going to be fixed overnight, but here are a few urgent action items to be addressed right now.

Make sure Mmodi, Mthethwa and Hlanti don’t miss the Soweto Derby
The first item on the agenda is a tricky trip to Golden Arrows. It’s important to get a result here, make no question about that, but the squad must also be smartly managed. Pule Mmodi, Sibongiseni Mthethwa and Sifiso Hlanti are all on three bookings for the season. Their next local game is also against Cape Town Spurs, on the 8th of November. Johnson might prefer them to sit out a suspension in that contest, rather than the match that follows, against Orlando Pirates. Could we see some tactical yellow cards picked up against Abafana Bes’thende? It would be disastrous if any of these key stars got booked against Spurs and then missed an almighty Soweto Derby.

According to OptaJabu, Kaizer Chiefs have lost each of their last seven league games when Itumeleng Khune started. It’s not the type of record any player wants to have, and certainly not one you’d associate with the great man. He was also in the starting XI when Amakhosi got dumped out of the Carling Knockout Cup. is now in his 17th season with the club he’s served with such distinction. He recently made his 364th appearance for Amakhosi, the most of any player in the club’s PSL era history. The 2023-24 campaign will be his last at the club as a player. Will we see much of Itu between now and the end of May? It seems doubtful. There’s no point selecting him on sentimental ground anymore.
