It was only a matter of time before Kaizer Chiefs were officially eliminated from 2023/2024 DStv Premiership title contention.
And that happened on Tuesday evening.
Amakhosi are currently in eighth place in the standings with 30 points after 23 matches.
Should they win their remaining seven matches, the best the Glamour Boys could do would be 51 log points.
However, thanks to log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns’ 1-0 win over Cape Town Spurs at the Athlone Stadium on Tuesday, Masandawana moved to 52 points after just 20 matches.
Those three points officially ended any remote chance Kaizer Chiefs had of winning the league title.
Lucas Ribeiro Costa’s 42nd-minute penalty settled matters in the clash in the Cape.
Kaizer Chiefs last tasted league title success in the 2014/2015 season.
In the 27 completed seasons to date, Kaizer Chiefs have only been crowned champions of South Africa on four occasions – the same number as Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates.
By contrast, Mamelodi Sundowns are on track for a 14th title this season.
Mamelodi Sundowns have a 13-point lead atop the standings and have played two fewer matches than their closest challengers Stellenbosch FC.
It’s only a matter of time before the Tshwane giants get to lift the trophy.
