ITUMELENG KHUNE BACKS BRANDON PETERSON AS THE NEXT KAIZER CHIEFS NUMBER ONE

Speaking to the media since coach Cavin Johnson dropped Peterson for him, Khune still believes the mistake-prone goalkeeper has all the quality to be Amakhosi and Bafana Bafana’s number one.

“He’s a great goalkeeper since he came to the club. He’s a future Bafana Bafana goalkeeper and I support him on that,” said Khune, as quoted by FARPost.

“I say to him, ‘don’t drop your head, don’t give up, keep pushing, keep working hard and your best will come.’

“He has played more games than me in the past two or three seasons. It shows that he’s good and shows that he’s got great potential,” the 36-year-old Chiefs legend added.

“As the captain of the club, I’m grooming him on my way out. When the legs cannot carry me anymore, the armband will be in safe hands,” Khune concluded.

CAVIN JOHNSON ON DROPPING BRANDON PETERSON

Addressing the public since his decision to pick Khune, Johnson said the logic is to protect Peterson.

“Brandon [exclusion] was a psychological thing. It could have happened to Khune, it could have happened to [Bruce] Bvuma,” Johnson explained, as quoted by Goal.

“We need to protect what belongs to us and sometimes we have to make those decisions in order to protect the players for the future.

“I think he will just get stronger and stronger,” the Chiefs tactician added.

NEXT DSTV PREMIERSHIP FIXTURE

In the meantime, Khune is focused on the upcoming DStv Premiership battle.

Amakhosi will make a short trip to Dobsonville to take on Moroka Swallows on Sunday, 26 November.
