A former Chelsea manager is amongst the names being touted as a preferred option to become the Kaizer Chiefs new coach.

The Glamour Boys’ Football Manager Bobby Motaung told Sport24 this week that the club are looking to cut their shortlist down from six to three, and they aim to make an appointment “before the start of pre-season”.

So who is in the frame to take on one of the toughest jobs in South African football? We had a look at the big names linked to the vacancy:

Who will be the Kaizer Chiefs new coach?

Avraam Grant

He’s the stand-out name on the list and one that will be most familiar to a global football audience. It’s been 10 years since Avraam Grant finished as a Champions League finalist and second in the league with Chelsea.

Since then, he managed Portsmouth and West Ham – as well as the Ghanaian national team for three years – before taking a role in the Indian Super League.

Nikola Kavazovic

So this Serbian’s CV reads like a travel journalists’ itinerary. He’s coached teams in Laos, the Maldives, Tajikistan, Bangladesh and Botswana. But do you know what? He’s won every single one of those leagues, within a season or two of arriving.

Can he have the same instant impact with Chiefs? He’ll need a bit more time to adjust to the PSL, but his record shows he gets teams winning games instantly.

Patrice Carteron

He took the Malian national team to 21st in the FIFA World Rankings and guided them to a third-place finish at the African Cup of Nations in 2013.

With Congolese giants TP Mazembe, Carteron led the club to two league titles, three African Super Cup titles, and one African Champions League title. He’s a man who knows the continent well and could be tempted to leave current club Phoenix Rising.

Luc Eymael

No doubt his finest hour came during the last game he took charge of, guiding Free State Stars to their first silverware for almost 24 years back in May. The Belgian lead his side to a 1-0 victory in the Nedbank Cup final against Maritzburg United.

He had a respectable season in charge of Polokwane City in the 2016/17 season and has also previously won league titles in Gabon and Congo.

Stuart Baxter

Better the devil you know? In a three-year spell with Kaizer Chiefs, Baxter won the double in the 2012-13 season and the MTN 8 cup in 2014, before leaving the club a year later.

He’s currently in charge of the South African national team, but things aren’t exactly going according to plan with Bafana Bafana. Could becoming the Kaizer Chiefs new coach offer him a route back into domestic football?
