Kaizer Chiefs move as star midfielder is set for imminent exit. The decision to part ways has sent shockwaves through the football community. As the club prepares for a new chapter under new leadership. His departure raises questions about the delicate balance between player potential and adequate opportunities.

Matlou’s Struggles: A Tale of Talent Hindered by Injury

The revolving door at Naturena might be in constant motion come the end of the season. Kaizer Chiefs are set to release a talented midfielder whose injuries have crippled his time at Amakhosi. Chiefs will not renew the contract of midfielder Lehlogonolo George Matlou when it expires in June, as per The Citizen.

Matlou has struggled to cement his place in the Amakhosi line-up. Since joining the club from Moroka Swallows in July 2022. This season, the 25-year-old has only made 10 appearances in all competitions for Chiefs.

Chiefs tried to send Matlou out on loan during the January transfer window. In order for him to get game time but no club was keen to sign him.

Kaizer chiefs move: New Leadership and the Fate of Matlou

“The boy has a lot of potential hence Chiefs signed him from Swallows, but let’s be honest, he has not really looked comfortable playing for the club. He’s really struggling to adapt to playing for a big team like Chiefs,” said their source.

“He is not even making the match day squad these days. That shows that he is not in the coach’s plans hence the club has decided to let him go at the end of the season.

“He’s only 25, so he has time to rediscover the form that saw him being signed by Chiefs. But he’ll do that somewhere else not at Chiefs next season,” ended their source.

The Soweto-born player, although young, has been somewhat of a journeyman having been on the books of Wits, Cape All Stars, Cape Umoya United, and AD Sanjoanense in Portugal before a return to Dobsonville with Swallows.

This does bring up the question of if this is a good decision. Given the fact that the interim coach is only a temporary solution and the new mentor would maybe have a different view on George Matlou.

Shouldn’t the final decision lie with the new coach? Or perhaps the new coach already wields influence behind the scenes, as it falls within their responsibilities to negotiate new contracts and decide on player releases.
