Chiefs find themselves languishing in sixth place in the DStv Premiership thus far, with the squad underperforming. The team has not fared much better in the cup competitions either. Under Molefi Ntseki, they were knocked out of both the MTN8 as well as Carling Knockout Cup. That prompted the Amakhosi management to relieve the former Bafana Bafana coach of his duties.

It was previously reported by this publication that, Chiefs were ready to give Matlou another season. This was to reward him for his decent form before the injury. But now, in a quick turn of events, it looks like they may have changed their minds.

Matlou set for Chiefs exit

“The previous technical team was convinced that he (Matlou) still has a future at the club (Chiefs) and that’s why the club had initially offered to extend his contract for another year plus a one-year option. But now things have changed and it’s not getting better for him. He was already supposed to be either released or loaned out but since his contract is expiring in June this year I don’t think there is much to be done now. It’s almost as good as done for him as far as renewing his contract is concerned. It’s almost 90% they won’t renew it though they had given him hope late last year,” said one source to Soccer-Laduma.

The second source believes that it is the injury that may cost Matlou a new deal at Chiefs.

“I think if he was not injured then maybe he could have convinced management and the technical team that he can still help the team but since he has been out for a long time now, it has killed his hopes of signing a new contract. “There have been players who have been doing well while he has been out with injury and that dwindled his chances of getting a new deal and so come the end of the season he is expected to be out of the club,” said the second source.
