Kaizer Chiefs are in great form but there’s still one MAJOR problem

Kaizer Chiefs have found a winning formula, but they need to avoid some of their old habits to progress up the table in 2024.

Kaizer Chiefs have picked up three wins on the bounce and head to Sekhukhune full of confidence. However, there’s still a massive issue for the technical team to address.

ICYMI: Kaizer Chiefs trying to sign these TEN players?

Kaizer Chiefs lacked continuity for some time

Wins over Swallows, Polokwane and Richards Bay are all good and well, but when last did Chiefs actually know their best team? When last did any of Arthur Zwane, Molefi Ntseki or Cavin Johnson select the same starting XI in consecutive matches that wasn’t forced by injuries? Continuity is key in football, and there’s no point changing a winning formula. There has been decent continuity in the last three matches, but that’s easy when you’re winning. Will Cavin Johnson stick to his guns when the club hits another sticky patch of bad results?

Injuries hardly help

Of course, the coach can’t select the same XI week in, and week out when injuries pop up. Thatayaone Ditlhokwe’s recent shoulder dislocation means interim boss Johnson has had to break up his partnership with Given Msimango in the heart of defence. Even so, there was still plenty of unnecessary rotation of fit players who were performing well in the early months of the campaign.

Decisions, decisions

Against Richards Bay, Jasond Gonzalez got the nod upfront with Pule Mmodi and Christian Saile flanking him and Nkosingiphile Ngcobo in support as the number 10. Against Polokwane, it was Ranga Chivaviro who led the line. The injury to Ashley du Preez has forced Johnson’s hand in this regard, in that he has just two recognized strikers from which to choose.
